Live from the vault... Cody Marlowe

In an age of digital editing, pitch correction, and endless production possibilities, its refreshing to hear a raw performance of a song. Here at the vault we believe that great music always boils down to an individual, or a group of individuals, who have developed a craft; artist's with the ability to create an experience... to portray a feeling that people want, using only their voices and instruments.

We have decided to kick off a new thing. Periodically, (once a month?... whenever we feel like it?) we will invite one of our favorite songwriters to the vault for a stripped down live-performance recording session. All we will give them are a couple of microphones, a couple of beers, and an opportunity to share a few songs. It will mostly be individuals, maybe duos, we'll see. The recordings will be "as is;" no editing, no fixing, correcting, or overdubbing; screw ups and forgotten lyrics included. The recordings will be shared free for anyone who enjoys a genuine performance.

Our hope is that this will allow us the opportunity to expose some of the raw talent that is out roaming around bars, venues, arenas, coffee shops, wherever... and that it will help to inspire artists to become the next great American Songwriter, instead of another American Idol.

To kick it off, we've invited our good friend and session writer for the studio, Cody Marlowe. We are currently working on pre-production for his new record... Here are a few extra songs he had laying around. Enjoy; and if you're into it, please pass it along...

Catch Cody live at Eddie's Attic on July 3rd.

Meet Kelsey Collins...

Kelsey is a singer/songwriter/guitarist/ukulele picker from a small town in Mississippi. Shes been traveling in on weekends to make music with us at The Vault.

This summer we will be back in the studio recording more songs for her upcoming E.P. The project is being produced by our very own Joey Huffman, who is also playing B3/piano/wurlitzer; with drums and bass by Zach Wheeler, and Ryan Sellors. The project will also have some special guests including the legendary Peter Stroud... so stay tuned!

Here's a little preview...

Andy Buckner

Last year I was asked to engineer a record for Andy Buckner up at Echo Mountain in Asheville NC. We locked ourselves in for an 84 hour studio week and cranked out 12 songs.

Most of the record was done live, so I'd say it has the genuine southern rock vibe; tracked on the Neve 8068 console with every vintage microphone you can imagine. We brought it back to The Vault to do some guest overdubs and mix it. We had some pretty killer guests on this project including Charlie Starr (Blackberry Smoke), Rick Richards (The Georgia Satellites), Jason "Rowdy" Cope and "Cowboy" Eddie Long (Jamey Johnson), and our very own Joey Huffman (Hank Williams Jr.) who also produced the record.

Andy's self titled, debut record is out now, available on iTunes or at any of his numerous upcoming shows. Andy pulled over 1,500 people to his CD release show in Asheville last week... Things are happening with this guy so keep an eye out for him!

Here is my favorite song off of the record; Play Me One More featuring Rick Richards on slide guitar and Joey Huffman on piano.

Kevin Dunbar

Meet one of our favorite people, Kevin Dunbar...

In the past few months we have recorded and released two singles, "I Am Not A Hero (She Don't Mind)" and "Transport." From string arrangements to big rocking guitars, hes got it all... and we're not talking lame-ass synth strings; Kevin brings the real deal.

Kevin is currently seeking new artists to co-write and collaborate with. He has teamed up with our good friends at Oakey Agency and has launched a new website Oakey Agency filmed a segment here at the studio about Kevin's musical journey. It has been chosen by Atlanta Film Festival Filmmakers to be included in a showing at Plaza Atlanta on February 13th. (More info at

J.R. Rund

Recently did a song with one of my favorite dudes, JR Rund. Check it out!
....and go harass him on twitter and tell him to do a record @JRistheholdup

JR on acoustic guitar and all vocals, Zach Wheeler on drums, Phil Smith on bass, Joey Huffman on keys, Nathan Bedingfield on electric guitar, and I also played a little guitar to fill in the gaps.

In November I finished up a 5 song E.P. by Foxhollow; a new songwriting duo comprised of guitarist Joel Hoffman and singer Cody Marlowe. I played electric/slide guitar on it and we recruited Zach Wheeler on drums, and Joey Huffman on bass and keys. We put Joey to work on this one; pulling out B3, piano, and Wurlitzer.

The project has an Americana sort of vibe and I think it reflects the fall/winter season that it came out of. There are some money choruses on here so check it out!

You can catch Foxhollow live at Eddie's Attic on February 7th. Information and tickets can be found here.  Kelsey Collins will be traveling in from Mississippi to open up the show. Stay tuned to hear about her record that we are working on now!
